Author Interview: Pam Bachorz

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 |

Hey all! I haven't posted an author interview for a long time, haven't I? Anyways, I have Pam Bachorz, author of recent release Candor! Candor was released on Sept 2009. Hope you enjoy the interview!

Did you ever imagine of becoming an author?

Yes, I've wanted to be an author since I was five. But I also wanted to be a teacher, librarian, artist, gymnast, Olympic synchronized swimmer, figure skater, actress, chemist, and journalist! Writer is the thing that stuck.

Which of the characters are you most like in the book, and why?
Oh there's probably pieces of me in every character. Oscar gets to be as snarky as I wish I could be; Nia shares my love of art; Sherman loves chocolate as much as I do.... etc.

Can you tell us a bit about Candor?
CANDOR is a story about a town where everyone is brainwashed... except Oscar, who's found a secret way around the Messages that control everyone's thoughts. When he falls in love with the new girl in town, Nia, he must decide whether to risk his safety or lose her to the Messages.

If you were to be brought to a deserted island, which 5 books would you bring and why.
--Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery (which I have loved since I was 8 or 9)
--Masterpiece by Elise Broach, in audio format (my son is obsessed with this audio book and falls asleep to it every night)
--The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex (it makes me laugh out loud and I figure I'll need that if I'm stuck on an island)
--The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly (I'm reading this lovely book right now and I would NOT want to give it up without reading the ending!)
--some sort of first aid or survival book (for the obvious reasons...)

List 5-10 favorite things (Doesn't have to be in order)
Late afternoon sun
Raspberries
Cupcakes
My son's giggle
Dominos (the game, though the pizza isn't bad either)

What are you most afraid of?
Losing mental capacity or control. Not so surprising that I wrote a book about brainwashing, eh? I'm not a big fan of spiders, either. Hmm. Maybe I should be cooking up spider stories.

Are you planning to write more books?
But of course! I am about to turn my next YA in to my editor at Egmont USA, and then... another YA. I'm not sure what, next. I can't imagine stopping, though.

Thanks Pam, that was a great interview!
