Author Interview: Becca Fitzpatrick

It's Becca Fitzpatrick here with us today, she is the debut author of Hush, Hush which is everywhere in the blogosphere, please welcome Becca :)

Who or what inspired you to become a writer?
When I was eight, I watched Romancing the Stone for the first time. Kathleen Turner's character plays a romance novelist who flies to Colombia to rescue her sister from Bad Guys, and ends up finding romance and danger that surpasses anything she's ever written. As soon as I saw the movie, there was no turning back. I knew I wanted to be an author. Of course, I thought all writers hunted for treasure in Colombia with a sexy mysterious guy who wears crocodile boots!

What are some of your strengths and weaknesses in writing?
Oh man, great question! I'm going to base my answers on what others have told
me (total cop-out, right?). A few people have told me I do a nice job
creating characters so real “you want to reach in and shake them for
making such bad decisions.” As for weaknesses, I don't need anyone to
tell me I could improve on strengthening character motivations. I'm
working on it, I promise!

Who or what inspired you to write Hush, Hush?
The very first inspiration for the story came from an experience in my own
tenth-grade biology class. We must have been studying human
reproduction, because my teacher asked me, in front of the whole
class, to name characteristics I would be attracted to in a mate. I
sat next to a really cute boy, and the thought of naming
characteristics I might look for in a mate was a humiliation I was not
about to subject myself to. But the experience always stuck with me,
and when I sat down to write Hush, Hush, that little piece of my
history evolved into an early scene in the book.

What's your favorite TV show?
I don't think I can name one favorite.
How about three? Alias, Veronica Mars and Burn Notice (notice the spy
motif).

What's your favorite type of drink?
Plain old boring...water. I rarely drink anything else. Water just tastes so good. Seriously,
who needs Coke?

What are some of your favorite books?
SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson; Linda Gerber's Death By series, anything by Meg Cabot, TWILIGHT by Stephenie Meyer, MAKE LEMONADE by Virginia Euwer Wolff, THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak, WICKED LOVELY by Melissa Marr, and ANNE OF GREEN
GABLES by L.M. Montgomery. Outside of YA, I enjoy J.D. Robb's In Death series, Sandra Brown's romantic suspense novels, THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB by Karen Joy
Fowler and classics like WUTHERING HEIGHTS, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA,
and anything and everything by Jane Austen.

Any advice for any young aspiring writers out there?
Keep a journal and write in it daily, and read. Reading is brain candy!

Have any other upcoming books?
I just finished Crescendo, the sequel to Hush, Hush. Crescendo has been a lot of fun to write – hopefully readers think it's an excellent follow-up to Patch and Nora's (dangerous!) love story. I'm taking a week or so off to clear my head, and then I'll either dive into a third book in the Hush, Hush series, or start on a YA romantic comedy that I've been dying to
write.
