Ari can’t help feeling lost and alone. With teal eyes and freakish silver hair that can’t be changed or destroyed, Ari has always stood out. And after growing up in foster care, she longs for some understanding of where she came from and who she is.

Her search for answers uncovers just one message from her long dead mother: Run. Ari can sense that someone, or something, is getting closer than they should. But it’s impossible to protect herself when she doesn’t know what she’s running from or why she is being pursued.

She knows only one thing: she must return to her birthplace of New 2, the lush rebuilt city of New Orleans. Upon arriving, she discovers that New 2 is very...different. Here, Ari is seemingly normal. But every creature she encounters, no matter how deadly or horrifying, is afraid of her.

Ari won’t stop until she knows why. But some truths are too haunting, too terrifying, to ever be revealed.
Compelling and intriguing, Darkness Becomes Her is led with a fierce heroine and a steaming love interest. Keaton succeeds in creating a beautiful world with charming characters, and kicking it old school with romance, Greek mythology, action, urban fantasy, and a bit of drama.

Ari, the bold and daring heroine sets out to travel to where she was born to find out more about her past. The world that Keaton creates is eccentric and fantastic… it’s so different and original, and so much mysteries lie within New 2.

Even though action packed, the plot was decently paced… it never felt rushed. Keaton adds in a mythological twist that had made the story such a page-turner. It’s very realistic hence the fact that it’s a young adult paranormal novel, with lots of supernatural elements thrown in.

Keaton’s creation of the fearless orphaned, and bold heroine, Ari is so unique from other characters. Her eye and hair color has always made her different. When it comes to saving lives of her own and her friends, she’s very daring and she isn’t afraid. Early in the story, we don’t know much about her but as it unravels, Ari is to turn out powerful, but she doesn’t know it. The oldest in a group of kids in New 2, Sebastian was also very interesting. As soon as he was introduced, it was obvious there would be a love interest between the two. He’s definitely the hot, intimidating type of guy.

You will for sure hate the ending… in a good way. I am now dying for the sequel because the ending was a shocker; nonetheless, the mystery isn’t completely done… I need book two now… please.

Darkness Becomes Her is an enticing debut… Keaton effectively tackles a young adult paranormal novel and making it seem realistic. It’s spooky, charming, and enthralling-- you have to read it.
